Updated: Mar 19

Parenthood is a journey filled with joys, challenges, and unexpected twists and turns. For parents of children with additional needs, accessing and participating in community activities can present unique hurdles that we never considered prior to living in this space. From navigating physical barriers to encountering misconceptions and stares, the journey can often feel isolating and daunting. However, it's essential to recognize that you are not alone in this journey. Understanding the challenges and seeking out support can make all the difference in accessing the community with your child.

Understanding the Challenges: The challenges faced by parents of children with additional needs varied. One of the primary obstacles is the lack of accessibility in public spaces. Whether it's navigating places without space for a special stroller or wheel chair or encountering buildings without ramp access, physical barriers can significantly limit participation in community activities. All of this, ontop of stigma and misconceptions surrounding disabilities can lead to social exclusion and discomfort for both the child and their family.

We are here to help in as many ways that we can, and endeavour to make these blog posts frequent, and supportive to provide ideas on how to nagivate accessing the community; with places to go that we recommend too!

Seeking Support and Resources: Despite these challenges, it's crucial for parents to remember that support is available. Connecting with other families who are navigating similar journeys can provide invaluable support and understanding. Local support groups, online forums such as 'Mighty Mums Perth' , and community supports (LIKE US) can serve as lifelines, offering not only emotional support but also practical advice and resources.

Tips for Accessing the Community: While the journey may seem overwhelming at times, there are steps parents can take to make accessing the community a more manageable and enjoyable experience:

  1. Plan Ahead: Research accessible venues and activities in advance to avoid unnecessary stress and frustration. Follow our blog posts for reviews on accessible areas, and tips/tricks on how we navigate community access with our clients!

  4. Focus on Abilities: Celebrate your child's strengths and abilities, rather than focusing solely on their challenges. Encouraging participation in activities that align with their interests and abilities can boost confidence and foster a sense of belonging.

Accessing the community with a child who has additional needs may present unique challenges, but it's important to remember that you are not alone. By understanding the challenges, seeking support, and advocating for inclusion, parents can create opportunities for their children to thrive and participate fully in the community. Together, we can work towards building a more inclusive society where every child feels valued and embraced for who they are.
