At Kalkoup Clinics, we know how important access to technology and the internet is for learning, development, and staying connected. For families with children who have additional needs, reliable internet can be the difference between accessing therapy services, participating in online learning, and staying engaged in the school community.
That’s why we’re excited to share information about the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI)—a government-funded program providing free home internet to eligible families across Australia.
What is the SSBI?
The School Student Broadband Initiative is a nationwide program designed to help families who currently do not have an active nbn® internet connection at home. The goal is to ensure school-aged children have reliable internet access to support their education and development.
Eligible families receive:
✅ Free nbn® home internet (50/20 Mbps speed)
✅ Unlimited data
✅ A free Wi-Fi modem
✅ Service until 30 June 2028
Who is Eligible?
To qualify for the SSBI, families must meet the following criteria:
✔️ Have a school-aged child (Kindy/Pre-Primary to Year 12) living at home (full or part-time)
✔️ Not currently have an nbn® home internet service (mobile data does not count)
✔️ Live in a location that can be connected to the nbn® network
Families with children who require telehealth services, online therapy sessions, or additional learning support can benefit greatly from this initiative.
How to Apply
1️⃣ Call the SSBI National Referral Centre at 1800 954 610 (Monday–Friday, 10 am–6 pm AEDT).
2️⃣ They will assess your eligibility based on your address and situation.
3️⃣ If eligible, you’ll receive a voucher to redeem with a participating internet provider.
4️⃣ Choose a provider, and they’ll set up your free internet service!
Why This Matters for Families with Additional Needs
Many children require consistent online access for speech therapy, occupational therapy, tutoring, and even social interactions. Unfortunately, the cost of internet services can be a barrier for some families.
This program removes that barrier, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive in their learning environment—whether it’s completing schoolwork, attending online therapy sessions, or accessing essential educational resources.
Don’t Miss Out!
The SSBI is capped at 30,000 families, and applications close on 31 December 2025, or earlier if places fill up. If you think your family may be eligible, apply as soon as possible to secure free internet for your child’s education and development.
