Updated: May 1

Raising a child with additional needs can be both rewarding and challenging. Parents often find themselves navigating a complex roundabout of medical appointments, therapy sessions, and meetings with NDIS, all while balancing the everyday demands of family life. In the midst of these challenges, having a strong support network can make all the difference.

We apprecaite it can often feel isolating, but you are not alone. Connecting with other parents who understand your experiences can provide a sense of validation, empathy, and belonging can help in many ways. A support network can offer emotional support, practical advice, and a safe space to share both joys and frustrations and is a fantastic place to learn tips and tricks from those who also walk a simmilar path to you and your family. Although, we apprecaite it may take some time to create these bonds you can trust.

Where do I find this community you speak of?

  1. Local Support Groups: Look for local support groups or organizations that cater to parents of children with similar needs. These groups often host regular meetings, workshops, and social events where parents can connect and share resources. Playgroups such as what the Autism Association hold are a great way to start from a young age also.

  2. Online Communities: The internet has made it easier than ever to connect with other parents from around the world. Join online forums, Facebook groups, or social media communities dedicated to parents of children with additional needs. These virtual spaces offer a wealth of knowledge, support, and camaraderie. One popular Perth group is "Mighty Mums Perth", and is such a close knit supportive group that should you be an inpatient at the local hospital and need a coffe, I'm sure someone would be willing to bring one up to you on the ward! Yep, your own little online community can spread to life long in person friendships!

  3. School and Therapy Settings: Take advantage of opportunities to connect with other parents at your child's school or therapy sessions. Strike up conversations at school pick ups, your children go to school together and are there to grow together - how great to know their parents!

  4. Community Centers and Events: Keep an eye out for community events, workshops, or conferences focused on topics related to parenting children with additional needs. These events can be great opportunities to meet other parents, SABA Rose Foundation often holds amazing fundraisers!

Building a support network is essential for parents of children with additional needs. Whether it's finding community with other parents, accessing resources and information, or advocating for your child's needs, know that you are not alone on this journey. By reaching out, connecting with others, and tapping into available resources, you can find the support and strength you need to navigate the joys and challenges oof the journey you are on.
